DCF Quick Facts
Substance Abuse and Mental Health
The Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health is the legislatively appointed state authority for substance abuse, mental health, and methadone designation, governed by s. 394, F.S. and s. 397, F.S. It is responsible for the oversight of a statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental health conditions or substance use disorders. The statewide system of care is built on a regional foundation of community involvement and coordination with internal and external partners that provide behavioral health services. The Office does not directly provide any community-based behavioral health services, but contracts with regional managing entities.
The managing entities are responsible for the development, planning, administration, implementation, and management of behavioral health care in their respective contracted areas. Direct-care services are provided by local behavioral health providers through contracts with the managing entity.
