DCF Highlights Domestic Violence Awareness Month,
Shares Statewide Community Activities
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In commemoration of the thousands of Florida’s victims and survivors of domestic violence, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) will recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month by honoring and supporting victims and survivors of this devastating crime. Throughout October, communities around the state will host ceremonies, vigils and other events to promote awareness and education about the effects of domestic violence crime.
"Domestic violence touches all levels of society, either directly or indirectly, from the worst cases of extreme violence to intangible emotional and financial losses,” DCF Secretary George Sheldon said. “Sources of hope require advocacy services. Without the Governor and Legislature’s continued support, our ability to provide financial assistance would be greatly compromised. During this special month, we would like to thank the Governor and the Legislature for always considering the needs of Florida’s families first and foremost."
During the past three years, Gov. Charlie Crist, Secretary Sheldon, and the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence (FCADV) have shared a solid relationship to Promote Peace-Prevent Domestic Violence in Florida. Through keen insight and leadership abilities there have been legislative funding opportunities designed to provide a stable and safe means for survivors of domestic violence seeking to end abuse.
Secretary Sheldon and all Department employees recognize the need for community partnerships aimed at developing solutions to domestic violence crime. Most recently the Department has partnered with the Attorney General and the FCADV to provide leadership, resources, and research involving Florida’s escalating domestic violence homicide rate.
The Department welcomes this opportunity to share some of the numerous statewide activities planned throughout Florida demonstrating community-wide commitments to raise awareness and encourage community activism to end domestic violence.
