Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll Joins Florida Foster Youth at 3rd Annual
Myron Rolle Wellness and Leadership Academy

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll and Department of Children and Families Secretary David Wilkins will welcome more than 90 children and teenagers to the 3rd Annual Myron Rolle Wellness and Leadership Academy on Saturday July 23.

Myron Rolle reads to a camper.

The youth will arrive at the beautiful grounds of the Florida National Guard’s Camp Blanding near Starke, Fla. to participate in the camp on July 23 through July 27, 2011.

For the past three years, the Department, the Myron Rolle Foundation and the Florida National Guard have hosted the five-day statewide academy for Florida’s foster youth between the ages of 12 and 15. Campers participate in physical fitness, leadership and character building activities. Every night, they will watch a movie and listen to inspirational speakers.

The camp provides foster youth with opportunities and experiences many of us take for granted. Ashton, a 12-year-old foster youth from Sarasota, will be attending camp this month for the first time. His future goals are to enroll in the Coast Guard and learn new leadership skills at the camp.

"By sharing time and experiences with these great athletes, leaders and young men and women their own age, children attending the camp can aspire to achieve success in education, employment and live the American dream," Wilkins said.

“We emphasize physical fitness because we feel if you keep the body healthy and strong you have the energy to go out and make a difference in the world,” former Florida State University football great and Rhodes Scholar Myron Rolle said. “Good fuel in provides good results out.”

Dr. Claire Grove, owner of the non-profit Stepping Onward and known for focusing on foster children and homeless adults will conduct three nutrition and fitness sessions. Campers will also be encouraged to eat healthy food.

The Myron Rolle and Wellness & Leadership Academy was used as a blueprint for our “Camps for Champions” program which is the first statewide summer camp initiative in the history of the Department.
