GOVERNOR CRIST SIGNS 2008-09 BUDGET AIMED AT SUPPORTING VITAL HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

~During tough economic climate, Governor, Legislature, support children, families and vulnerable adults~

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Children and Families Secretary Bob Butterworth applauded Governor Charlie Crist, Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp and the Florida Legislature today for their continued support for Florida's vulnerable children and families demonstrated in the 2008-09 budget. The 2008-09 budget focuses on the continued provision of vital services to Floridians during this tough economic time.

"During this challenging economic climate, I applaud Governor Crist and the Legislature for recognizing the needs of our most vulnerable," said Secretary Butterworth. "This funding will fuel our ongoing efforts to strengthen Florida's substance abuse and mental health treatment systems, enhance protective services and programs for adults and children, and strengthen our infrastructure in anticipation of the greater need for our services."

The 2008-09 budget highlights include:
  • $3.6 million for Florida children's zones to fund comprehensive prevention strategies for children in high-risk neighborhoods
  • $3 million to provide repairs to the state's 42 domestic violence shelters
  • $8.2 million from the Lawton Chiles Endowment Fund for maintenance and repairs of the state's mental health institutions
  • The Department of Children and Families was provided much-needed flexibility to transfer money to enhance child protection services and adoption. (Authority provided in House Bill 7077, not the General Appropriations Act.)
