Children and Families Secretary Announces New Director of Child Welfare Legal Services

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Department of Children and Families Secretary Bob Butterworth today named Mary Cagle the Department's new Director of Child Welfare Legal Services. Cagle, who currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of CHARLEE Homes for Children, a foster care agency in Miami, will begin work at the Department in September.

"We're fortunate to have someone with Mary's experience join our team," said Secretary Butterworth. "With her background in child welfare and her nearly 20 years in the state's judicial system, she is well-respected in the legal community and well-prepared to face the challenges ahead."

Since moving from Michigan to Florida in 1981, Cagle has served in a number of capacities in the 11th Judicial Circuit (Miami-Dade County) including Assistant State Attorney, County Court Division Chief for Public Corruption/Organized Crime, Deputy Chief of Special Prosecutions, and Chief Assistant State Attorney. She has served as Chief Executive Officer of CHARLEE Homes for Children since 2004.

Until Cagle joins the Department, Deputy General Counsel Peggy Sanford will continue to provide direction to Child Welfare Legal Services. Following Cagle's arrival, Sanford will serve the Department in a new role with the Family Safety Program Office where she will work closely with child protective staff to improve and enhance child welfare policy.

"Peggy has tremendous knowledge of child welfare law and will be a great asset to our Family Safety program," said Secretary Butterworth. "She will strengthen the connection between our legal work and development of child welfare policy."

Mary Cagle holds a Juris Doctor Degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan, and a B.A. in History from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
