Children and Families Launches Plain Language Web Site

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - The Department of Children and Families launched their plain language Web site today to educate Department staff and general Web users about the importance of plain language in state government. Under the leadership of Governor Charlie Crist, the Department started an internal Plain Language initiative in February aimed at speaking and writing in plain language for the benefit of the children and families it serves.

"I appreciate the hard work that the Department of Children and Families is doing to carry out the plain language initiative. I'm certain their efforts will enhance how they serve Florida's most vulnerable citizens," said Governor Crist. "Their work, along with their fellow state agencies, will help Florida's government have the best customer service possible."

The Web site provides users with manuals and training materials to show Department professionals how to use plain language in their daily activities. The site includes a before and after letter to show how plain language can improve the Department's interaction with the people it serves. In addition, users can also view video messages from Governor Crist and Secretary Bob Butterworth discussing the importance of plain language.

"The Department provides critical services to a variety of people. It is essential that we use easily understood information with every person we serve," said Secretary Butterworth. "We are committed to The Governor's Plain Language Initiative and I'm excited to see the positive changes it will bring to our Department."

In February, the Department formed a plain language workgroup to address Governor Crist's Executive Order from Governor Crist for all state agencies to communicate with the people of Florida through plain language. The members of the work group aim to ensure that all of the Department's existing and future documents as well as general communication are in plain language. In addition to the Web site, the workgroup is creating an online training for current and future employees. To view the Department's Plain Language initiative Web site, simply visit the Children and Families homepage and click on the icon for Plain Language.
