STATEMENT BY DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES SECRETARY
BOB BUTTERWORTH

Regarding the implementation of additional mental health treatment beds

"I am proud to announce the Department continues to progress in adding new mental health treatment beds in our state. Ten additional treatment beds became available yesterday, ahead of schedule, to provide immediate relief to those in need of mental health treatment. This progress, along with the work of department employees to serve those individuals in jail awaiting placement, is a significant step in the right direction for Florida's mentally ill population.

"Once again, I thank the Legislative Budget Commission for their gracious consideration of this issue, our partners in state government and the mental health community. The department is committed to assuring the health, safety and security of Florida's children and families, especially those individuals with mental illness.

"With the support of the legislature, community mental health advocates and the hard work of department employees throughout the state, we remain on track to make more treatment beds available over the coming months. In addition, we continue to evaluate Florida's mental health service system to determine how we can better serve this vulnerable population."
