Statement Regarding the Department Inspector General's Review of the Courtney Clark Case

~Regarding the Department Inspector General's Review of the Courtney Clark Case ~

"Through the Inspector General's report released today, it is apparent several weaknesses and deficiencies in our state's child protection system contributed to the confusion and delay in finding Courtney."

"As I stated following the release of the Quality Assurance Review three weeks ago, I find it unconscionable that failures throughout the system allowed this little girl to be missing for more than four months without it ever being reported."

"While I remain concerned by the findings of the Inspector General's investigation, I am confident that we are taking the right steps to address these problems."

"Last week I asked 13 prominent individuals in our criminal justice and child welfare systems to serve on a statewide Task Force on Child Protection. The task force is charged with reviewing all aspects of the child welfare system to identify any flaws or weaknesses that could compromise our ability to care for Florida's most vulnerable children."

"It's clear from these reviews, that our child welfare system needs fixing. And I assure you, as Secretary of this Department, the need for improvement remains urgent and my highest priority."
